French Explorers
Jean-Baptiste Charcot
(1867-1936) led the second French expedition to Antarctica, 1908-1910.
In January 1909 they crossed the Antarctic Circle and made camp on
Peterman Island. They reached 70°N 76°W in 1910 and explored the coast
to 124°. They returned to France in 1910. Their ship, the
Pourquois-Pas (Why Not?) is seen in the background of the
stamp which was issued to mark the 25th anniversary of Charcot's
death. The stamp does not show a map but a compass rose.
