Île Saint-Paul is part of the French Southern and Antarctic
Territories with an area of 2.3 square miles. It is located at
38º43′19″ S, 77º31′ 44″E. Fairview, Colorado in the United States is
the antipodes. The island is the top of an inactive volcano. It is
uninhabited and is used for occasional short term scientific or
ecological research.
The island was discovered in 1559 by Portuguese
sailors. The first landing, however, was not until 1696. In 1928 a
cannery was established on the island. It went bankrupt in 1931 and
seven employees were left stranded on the island until 1934 when two
survivors were rescued.
