Gudbrand Torláksson
(1550?-1627) became Bishop of Holar in 1570. He published a 84 books
for the religious education of the people. Among them was
Gudbrandsbiblia, the first complete Bible printed in Iceland, in 1584.
The New Testament was translated by Oddur Gottskálksson, while the Old
Testament was translated by Gudbrand. It was adorned with woodcuts and
ornamented initials. Copies commanded the price of two or three cows.
The stamps show an illuminated “D” and a miniature of Christ
ascending.
