The Wharncliffe Book of
Hours was illuminated in France by a celebrated artist, Maître
François. It was named for Nicholai Joseph Foucault, a 16th century
Earl of Wharncliffe. It is now in the National Gallery of Victoria in
Melbourne Australia. Australia has issued two sets of Christmas stamps
showing illuminations from the Wharncliffe Hours. The first, in 1989,
show the Annunciation to Mary, and the Annunciation to the Shepherds.
The second, issued in 2001
depict the Adoration of the Magi and the Flight into Egypt.
