Estonia 330
In 1686 the Wastne Testament (New Testament) was translated into the Tartu dialect of Estonian by Andreas Verginus, a
pastor at the southern Estonian parish of Kambja, edited by his son,
Adrian Verginus and printed by Johann Georg Wilcken at the Royal
Printing Press in Riga. The stamp issued in 1997 features a picture of
the Wastne Testament of 1686. The Uus Testament (Old
Testament) was translated into the North Estonian dialect and
published in 1715. The first book printed in Estonian that still
exists, is a Lutheran Catechism printed in 1535. Before that a
Lutheran book was published in 1925, but it was destroyed because it
was considered heretical.
