One way
of showing the character of the land surface in a map is through
shaded relief. Usually, green is used to indicate lowlands and
vegetation, while shades of brown represent mountains and deserts,
with white indicating high, snow-covered elevations.
The map
of Spain was issued in 1982 to mark Stamp Day. The fiftieth
anniversary of the National Institute of Geography was observed in
1990 by the map of France.
The
maps of the Falkland Islands and of South Georgia are semi-postals
issued to help finance the rebuilding of the islands following the war
with Argentina.
The map
of Iceland was issued to publicize the island’s off-shore fishing
rights.
