St. Fridolen is the
traditional founder of the Monastery of Säckingen, Baden in the 6th
century. Most modern historians believe that this attribution is not
authentic. Still, the stamp was issued in 1988 to mark the 600th
anniversary of the Battle of Naefels in which greatly outnumbered
Swiss defeated a much superior Austrian army. The stamp shows St.
Fridolin's banner, based on a miniature in a medieval manuscript,
under which the Swiss fought.
