The so-called “Market
Book” of Grein contains an entry in 1490 which secured the citizens’
rights and liberties granted by Emperor Friederich II. The miniature
on the Austrian stamp is by Ulrich Schreier (fl. ca. 1460-1490), an
Austrian illuminator and bookbinder, who illuminated the Market Book
at the end of his life. The stamp was issued in 1990 to commemorate
the 500th anniversary of the appointment of Linz as the provincial
capital of the “Land around the Enns.”
