Giotto painted the
Scrovegni Chapel series in Paudua in 1303-1306. In the Adoration of
the Magi he painted the comet of 1301 in place of the usual star
of Bethlehem. This is the first visually correct representation of a
particular comet. The artist used temper and gold pigments in textured
strokes to convey the appearance of the comet.
