This stamp was issued in 1957 to celebrate the 350th anniversary of
the founding of Jamestown, Virginia. In the lower, left corner of the
stamp is a small map of Hampton Roads, where the Monitor and the
Merrimac fought their famous battle. The stamp also paid tribute to
the International Naval Review which was part of the celebration.
The ship on the stamp is the aircraft carrier, USS
Forrestal, whose home port is Norfolk, Virginia. On the stamp it bears
the deck number "88," which is not correct. The correct number is
"59."
