Tanganyika and Zanzibar
Tanganyika was part of
German East Africa before World War I. It was mandated to Great
Britain after the War. In 196` it gained independence and became a
republic. Zanzibar joined it in 1964 to form the United Republic of
Tanganyika and Zanzibar, which was later renamed Tanzania.
Mafia Island is also a
part of Tanzania, South of Zanzibar Island.
Tonga
The island group is also
known as the Friendly Islands. It became a British Protectorate in
1900. It is a Kingdom in the British Commonwealth. The stamp was
issued in 1950 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the treaty of
friendship between Tonga and Great Britain.
