In 1986 the Ordenacion de la Cartographia, the law regulating
which governs cartographic production was passed. This stamp
commemorates the passage of that law. In it cartography is classified
into basic cartography, the gathering of actual survey data, the
angles and elevations measured in the field. “Derived” cartography,
the subject of this design, refers to the use of that data to create a
map based on that data, and finally, “thematic” cartography deals with
maps with different themes, such as population, land use, boundaries,
roads and highways, and so
on.
The map on the stamp, issued in 2006, depicts a derived
map of the city of Toledo from the series, Conjuntos Provinciales.
