The Reichenbach Falls
In 1891 Conan Doyle visited the Reichenbach
Falls near Meiringen in the Haslital Valley of Switzerland. Two years
later the Falls became the background for the death of Professor
Moriarty, and the supposed death of Sherlock Holmes in The Final
Problem. Doyle wanted to end the career of his detective, but the
public would not cooperate, so eight years later in 1901 Sherlock
Holmes returned in The Hound of the Baskervilles.
The Falls are actually a series of seven waterfalls
with a total drop of 300 meters. The picture on the stamp shows the
final falls.
