The Kingdom of Nepal
issued its first stamp in 1881. At first its stamps were valid only in
Nepal and India. In 1959 they became valid worldwide. This stamp is
part of a set of 12 stamps with the same design. The map shows the
major rivers of the country. The characters in the frame on the left
indicate the monetary denomination of the stamp, 16 pice.
In 1959 Nepal held its
first general election. This stamp commemorates that event. Nepal
continues to have close polictical and economic ties with India. The
map shows the country to be very mountainous and rugged.
