This two stamp set was
issued by Syria in 1968 to call attention to the completion of the oil
pipeline to Tartus on the Mediterranean Sea coast. Both stamps show
the same design.
In 1967 Iran issued a
stamp marking the nationalization of the Iranian Oil Company. It shows
a map of Iran, a portrait of the Shah, the oil company emblem and the
pipeline from Azerbaijan through Iran to Abadan on the Persian Gulf.
The stamp shows the 1000
mile Baku-Tiblisi-Ceyhan pipeline from the Caspian Sea oil fields
across Azerbaijan through Georgia and Turkey to the Mediterranian. The
pipeline is projected for completion in 2005 and will cost $2.95
billion. When it is finished it will pump up to 1 million barrels of
crude oil a day.
