Canada

     Canada is a self-governing dominion in the British Commonwealth of Nations. In xxxxxxxxx Canada issued a set of four stamps in 1949 showing the growth of Canada from 1867.
     Nova Scotia, New Brunswick Ontario and Quebec formed the Confederation in 1867. in 1870 Canada purchased the territory belonging to the Hudson's Bay Company. a small province of Manitoba was created out of this territory in 1870, the rest was known as the Northwest Territories.
     In 1871 British Columbia on the west coast joined in 1871, Prince Edward Island, in 1873, and the Arctic Islands in 1880.

     The Yukon Territory was created in 1898. In 1905 the Provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta were created. In 1912 the borders of Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec were basically settled with the border between Labrador and Quebec determined in 1927. In 1949 Newfoundland joined Canada.

In 1999 Nunavut, comprising a large part of the Northwest Territory, became the third Canadian territory with the Yukon and Northwest Territories.

Niagara-on-the-Lake was founded after the American Revolution by Great Britain which bought a six-mile-wide strip of land on the west bank of the Niagara River about 14 miles north of Niagara Falls for loyalists who had left the new nation. In 1812 it was burned by the Americans. The picture shows the community in 1781. The settlement in the upper right corner is Youngstown, New York.
