case was "The Gloria Scott," which took place in 1874, and was
published in 1893.

(1887)
Doyle published his
first story about Sherlock Holmes, A Study in Scarlet, in 1887,
although the action takes place in 1881. It was in this story that
Holmes identifies himself as world's first "consulting detective."
