Germany 691
A globe with outlines of the east coast of the Western Hemisphere and
the west coast of the Eastern Hemisphere is the background for the
stamp issued by Germany in 1952 to mark the centenary of the arrival
of Carl Schurz in America.
Schurz was appointed Minister to Spain by Abraham
Lincoln, served as a Major General in the Civil War, was the
Washington correspondent for the New York Tribune, editor of the
Detroit Post, and owner of the St. Louis Westliche Post. He was
elected United States Senator from Missouri, and was Secretary of the
Interior for Rutherford B. Hayes (1877-1881).
