Diego Garcia de Herrera
(1430-1485) was Lord of the Canary Islands (by marriage to Inés Peraza
de Las Casas, Lady of Las Canarias) and settled Ifni on the coast of
Africa in 1476. It was fortified and was a center for fishing,
slaving, and trading. It was lost in 1524, and reclaimed in 1860, but
not reoccupied until 1934. In 1969 it was ceded to Morocco.
The stamp was issued in 1950 to mark Stamp Day
(Dia del Sello). It shows a map of Spanish Western Sahara on
the coast of Africa, and the figure of de Herrera holding a flag.
