Jan F. A. Cateau van Rosevelt (1823-1891) was Surinam’s first Agent General of Immigration. He was also Surinam's chief explorer and cartographer. He made many maps between 1860 and 1879. He and J. F. A.E. van Lansberge (1839-1883), a captain in the army published the definitive map of Surinam in 1882. On the stamp he is pictured holding a map in front of the ship, “Lallah Rookh,” which brought the first indentured laborers from India in 1873. The stamp and two others were issued in 1973 to commemorate the arrival of the first Hindustanis in Surinam.
