The Abbey at Orval was founded in 1070 by Clabrian monks who soon left the foundation. It was re-established in the twelfth century as a Trappist abbey. The stamps issued in 1943 are said to have been adapted from illuminated letters in the twelfth century Chronicles of the Abbey.
