In 1522 Luther made a
translation of the New Testament from Erasmus' Greek text. In 1534 he
produced a translaton of a Hebrew text prepared by Philip Melancthon,
John Bugenhagen and Luther himself. Luther's translation into High
German shaped the German language for centuries. The translation was
not literal, but was shaped by his theology. He published a complete
Bible in 1541 at Wittenberg. The souvenir sheet was issued by the DDR
in 1983.
