Diego
Méndez (Didaco Mendezio) was the chaplain of the Monastery of the
Incarnation in Lima, and cartographer for the Viceroy of Peru. In 1574
he prepared the map, Peruviae Auriferae Regionis Typus, the
first scientific map of the area of Peru. It was published in
the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius, printed in
Antwerp in 1574. It is a beautiful map with two ships in the Pacific Ocean.
The one near the top of the map is a galley, the other is a sailing
ship.
The stamp was issued in 2003 to commemorate 100
years of diplomatic relations between Peru and Panama.
