In 1850 Henry Martyn
Whitney (1824-1904) was appointed to the office of postmaster of
Honolulu, a post he held for five and a half years. In 1883 the was
appointed Postmaster General of Hawaii.
The frame on the postal card, first issued in 1894,
measured 131½ x 72½ mm. It was re-issued in 1897 with a frame
measurement of 132½ x 74 mm. The map of the Pacific on Mercator’s
projection was taken from the back cover of Henry Whitney’s 1890
edition of The Tourists’ Guide Through the Hawaiian Islands, Honolulu:
The Hawaiian Gazette Co. It shows “...the relation of Principal Ports
and Naval Stations to the Hawaiian Islands.”
