Haiti 440
Haiti occupies the eastern third of the island of Hispaniola. It
achieved its independence through a slave revolt at the end of the
18th century. In 1844 the eastern two-thirds of the island declared
its independence from Haiti and became the Dominican Republic.
The stamp is one of an issue of two regular and three
airmail stamps; all but one air mail stamp have the same design, a map
of Haiti. These stamps were issued in 1958 as a tribute to the United
Nations.
