Aden 61
The view on the stamp issued in 1953 by Aden is based on Aden,
Arabiae foelicis emporium celeberrimi nominis quo ex India, Aethiopia,
et Perside negotiatures conueniunt, quo est magnifica, situ er
structura bene munita, aedificiorum nito re atque frequentia celebris,
muro er praecelsis sepra montibus, in quorum summitaribus ardentes
faces nauigentibus portum ostendunt, in volume one of Civitates
Orbis Terrarum by Georg Braun (1541-1622) and Frans Hogenburg
(1535-1590), published in 1572. It was published in six volumes from
1572 to 1617 with 530 maps of cities as a complement to Abraham
Ortelius’ Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, published in 1570.
Several ships are shown in the harbor, and the hills
above the city are crowned by castles. The view is similar to one in
an early 16th century Flemish woodcut.
