In 1386 Duke Leopold the
Hansome of Austria and his allies went to war with the Swiss in
Lucerne, Sempach, and Richensee. With 4,000 cavalry and 1,400 foot
soldiers they moved against 1,300 Swiss peasants at Sempach. The Swiss
were outnumbered and without armor but Arnold von Winkelried of
Unterwalden led them in a final deparate attack. They prevailed,
killing 2,000 Austrians on July 9, 1386.
The stamp was issued in 1986 to mark the 6th centenary
of the Battle of Sempach. The catalog indicates that the map dates
from 1698.
