Up Catalog

The minisheet was issued by Russia in 2000 honors twelve Russian scientists of various kinds. On the middle stamp of the third row from the top the scientist honored is Yuri Valentinovich Knorozov (1922-1999) who recognized, in the 1950s, that the Mayan glyphs did not represent an alphabet, but rather a syllabary. The stamp features several Mayan glyphs. Some of them also appear in the upper margin of the minisheet.
