The souvenir sheet
commemorates scientific research in the Antarctic by Brazil. The map
is of Admiralty Bay on King George's Island in the Shetland Islands.
Brazil has a large base, Commandante Ferraz, in Admiralty Bay.
This is shown on the map in the lower left of the sheet.
Georg Bathasar von Neumayer (1826-1909) was
the director of the North German Naval Observatory in Hamburg from
1876-1903, and was co-chair of the International Polar Commission in
1879. In 1895 he established the German Commission for South Polar
Exploration. He led the first German Antarctic expedition in
search of the South magnetic pole in connection with the "Antarctic
Year" in 1901.
The stamp was issued in 1993 to commemorate the 125th
anniversary of the North German Naval Observatory and its founder. The
blue line marks his route to Melbourne, Australia where he directed
the Flagstaff Observatory for Geophysics, Magnetism and Nautical
Science from 1857 to 1864. The red line marks the route of the
"Gauss" expedition to the Antarctic in 1901.
