The Dominican monastery of St. Catherine in
Stralsund was founded by Jaromar II, Prince of Rügen Island, in 1251.
In 1951 the German Museum of Oceanography was founded in 1951 and
established in the monastery.
In 2001 Germany issued a stamp which commemorated
both the 750th anniversary of the founding of the monastery and the
50th anniversary of the founding of the oceanographic museum. A view
of the monastery church is set against a background of a portion of a
map of the Atlantic Ocean.
Acoustic Mapping
The stamp shows an acoustic survey of the sea
bottom.
