The Gospel of Haghpat ~ 1211

Up Catalog

The Gospel was written at the Haghpat monastery in 1211 and illuminated by Markaré, a painter who lived in the suburb of Ani. The only narrative scene in the Gospel is the Entry into Jerusalem, which is the scene on the souvenir sheet issued by Armenia in 2006.
The scene contains Jesus on a donkey accompanied by two disciples. A person is climbing in the tree on the right, one of the crowd is on a lower branch of the next tree and two others are high above (behind the name Armenia in Armenian letters). There is a figure in the doorway of the tower laying a garment on the road, and in the top of the tower are two figures gesturing toward the figures in the tree. Two bearded figures are in the tower on the left side of the stamp.
