Netherlands Antilles B360d
The Netherlands Antilles is part of the
Lesser Antilles and consists of two groups of islands in the Caribbean
Sea: Curaçao and Bonaire, just off the Venezuelan coast, and Sint
Eustatius, Saba and Sint Maarten, located southeast of the Virgin
Islands. They were previously known as the Netherlands West Indies or
Dutch Antilles/West Indies.
On this stamp of the Netherlands Antilles the lines of
latitude and longitude are identified with their coordinates. The
identification of the longitude lies has been transposed. The
west-most longitude is marked 63°15’W while the east-most longitude is
marked 63°05’W.
A second possible error is the use of
“Caribbean Sea” rather than the proper Dutch “Caribische Zee.”
However, it is not altogether certain that this is an error. The
“everyday” language on these islands is English, so it is possible
that the designer used the “everyday” name for the sea.
