Japan 1644
The map on Japan 1644,
Iaponiae Insulae Descriptio, was received from Luis (Lodovico)
Teixiera, cartographer to King Philip II of Spain, and published in
Abraham Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum in 1595. The island
of Ezo (called Hokkaido now) has been omitted, and Korea, not
shown on the stamp, is drawn as an island.
The "land" images around the margins of the stamp are
not from Teixiera's map, and certainly given an erroneous impression
of Japan's situation.
