The Map is Anachronistic

Germany 664

Germany issued a set of three stamps with the same design to observe the 1949 Hanover Export Fair. The design includes a portrait of Herman Hildebrant Wedigh, a map and a ship. Wedigh represented the Hanseatic League at the London Stalhof. The portrait is based on one by Hans Holbein painted in 1533 and preserved in the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. The ship is a cog, the kind of ship used by the League.
The map is an elliptical projection, Mollweide or Aitoff, which is anachronistic for the portrait.
