     On the stamp, issued in 1940, in addition to the British Virgin Islands, the American island of St. John and several other islands are also shown in a lighter color. Among the other islands are Flanagan Island and Norman Island. Flanagan, closest to St. John is an American territorial possession, but Norman, close to Tortola, is British.
