Kiribati 417
A souvenir sheet
issued by Kiribati (pronounced Kee-ree-bas) shows maps of the three
island groups that make up the nation of Kiribati, the Gilbert group,
the Phoenix group, and the Line group. The islands in each group are
named, but the names of two islands in the Line group, Tabuaeran and
Teraina, are transposed.
Incidentally, the island
below them, Kiritibati, is pronounced "Christmas." It was sighted by
James Cook on Christmas Day, 1777, and is called Christmas Island
today.
