The Dream of the Doctor ~ 1498
As the "Doctor" sleeps by
his fireplace, a demon blows evil thoughts into his ear. The nude
Venus accompanied by Eros appears as a dream. The engraving is
preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Adam and Eve represent the
ideal human beings. The elk, hare, cat and ox symbolize the four
humors into which the human soul divided after the Fall. The cat and
mouse depict the tension between the genders, the parrot represents
Mary as a second Eve, and the ibex represents the infidels. It is
preserved at the State Art Museum in Karlsruhe.
