A three-stamp set was
issued by the New Hebrides in 1968 to commemorate the 200th
Anniversary of Louis-Antoine de Bougainville’s (1729-1811)
circumnavigation (1766-1769).
The low value has a
two-hemisphere map with the route of his circumnavigation, and the
“Bougainville Strait" highlighted. Also a globe. The middle value has
pictures of both ships and a map of the Bougainville Strait between
Espiritu Santo and Malo, and Malekula second largest island in the New
Hebrides (Vanuatu) archipelago. The high value has pictures of
Bougainville, ship’s figurehead , and a bougainvillaea.
