Batista Agnese

Up Catalog

The stamp design reproduces a nautical chart from an atlas of Battista Agnese from 1542. Agnese was a Venetian cartographer and portolan maker. His workshop produced over 60 sea atlases. The atlas is the property of the Vatican Apostolic Library. The picture of Columbus in the lower center of the souvenir sheet is from a painting belonging to the Museum of La Coruņa, Spain. The sheet commemorates the fifth centennial of the discovery of America.
